Erick Scott is a 16 year veteran of the Army National Guard. He was deployed to Iraq. Before leaving, his father said something he would never forget.
His father said, “Son, those 11 guys, make you sure you bring them all back.” Those words stuck to Erick. But unfortunately, not all of them were able to come back with him.
Erick felt extreme guilt that he wasn’t able to bring all 11 guys back. They call it ‘survivor’s guilt’. Because of this, Erick displayed symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Then Erick heard about K9 For Warriors, an organization that provides service dogs for soldiers with PTSD. There he met Gumbo, his service dog and friend. Amazing! Gumbo sensed that Erick was starting to get upset, and he quickly responded and tried to calm him down. What a good dog! Erick has indeed found a loyal friend to be by his side, a friend who can help him cope with PTSD.
We are thankful for Erick and his service to our country. He is a true American hero. We are glad that there are organizations like K9 for Warriors and dogs like Gumbo to transition our soldiers back into civilian life.
