Based in the town of Dahlonega, the TLC Humane Society is the only no-kill, non-profit shelter in town. They maintain both a physical shelter facility and a foster-care program. The shelter is nestled on six beautiful acres and features a ‘Puppy Palace’ with room for pups to roam and rest.
TLC has gone from caring for 18 animals to a regular intake of close to 300. The number of successful adoptions has skyrocketed, and now they consistently sustain a 95% adoption rate. In part, this is due to the fact that TLC hosts adoption events almost every weekend.
Prospective adopters are allowed to meet available dogs and cats every day during scheduled visiting hours. Even though they have a handful of long-term ‘residents’, the vast majority of their rescues are placed in homes in just two-to-three months.
In the last few years, TLC has made it a priority to reinvest in infrastructure. Not only have they constructed a ‘Cat Friendly Porch’ where felines can stretch out and play, they’ve also created a small Dog Park and established walking trails.
In their community, they advocate on behalf of companion animals to prevent cruelty and to end the practice of euthanasia. Their lost-and-found service has successfully reunited hundreds of missing pet kids with their families. And thanks to their ongoing efforts (both adoption and spay-and-neuter programs), the local population of stray animals has dramatically decreased. Since 1977, they’ve helped locate homes for more than 4,000 dogs and cats.
TLC plans to use their financial award to help cover the costs of veterinary care and daily operating expenses.
Here are several of TLC’s many available dogs and cats, each eagerly anticipating being adopted into their forever home …
