#1 -Don't give ANY treats or food with Corn, Wheat or Soy. A cheap protein source, it can be linked to allergen issues causing itching, scratching and dull coat. These ingredients are also susceptible to toxic mold contamination.
#2 - Look for products that are Made in the USA by small independent companies. Although you may think all pet food manufacturers have your pet’s best interests in mind, this is not always the case. Many large conglomerate corporations have invested in the pet market. Their goal is profits, not health and well being.
#3 - Probiotics help support healthy immune and digestive systems. Many products claim to have probiotics. Check the "Guaranteed Analysis" by the ingredients label if it's not there, it's not in there! Feed food with Guaranteed LIVE Probiotics.
#4- Avoid anything with by-products, unspecified meat and fat sources like "meat & bone meal", "meat", etc. By-products are slaughterhouse waste, can contain things like feathers, feet, beaks, anything except meat. Unspecified meat can contain dead animals like roadkill and dead zoo animals, rotten and outdated supermarket meats that do not sell are picked up to be used in some pet foods. Diseased animals, animals that have been euthanized like dogs and cats. Some cities collect roadkill to sell to the pet industry, some vets sell the carcasses of euthanized pets.
#5 - Your pets need a powerful antioxidant system. Among other nutrients, a powerful antioxidant system includes vitamins A, C and E and vegetables. The colorful skin and flesh of different vegetables and fruits contain phytonutrients, essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber.
#6 - Never give anything with artificial preservatives, colors or flavors. It's another way pet companies increase profits. It is not healthier for your pets. Some studies show it can actually be detrimental to their health.
#7 - Last but not least, I ONLY use a company that offers FRESH home delivery. If it is in the store, it has been sitting for an undisclosed mount of time which can diminish the nutritional value of the product. Also, there is risk of contamination from pesticides and other sprays that may leach the bag itself or into your skin as you handle the bag. This step saves me a ton of time, never having to juggle bags of food and treats from the store to my car and back to my house.
