​March 18, 2016 — Fromm Family Foods of Mequon, Wisconsin, has announced it is voluntarily recalling  three of its canned dog foods because they may contain elevated levels of vitamin D.
What’s Being Recalled?

The company is recalling all lots of the following three Fromm Gold canned dog foods:

  12 ounce cans

• Fromm Gold Chicken & Duck

The affected products were shipped to distributors between December 2015 and February 2016.
About the RecallFromm has discovered through its own analysis that the affected canned dog foods do not contain recommended levels of vitamins and minerals. 
These products may contain elevated levels of Vitamin D.

The recall is being implemented in an abundance of caution as symptoms should only be noted in situations where dogs have eaten the affected products as their only meal for an extended period of time and leading to depression of appetite. 
While there have been no reports of any health problems, Fromm is recommending the affected products not be fed.
The company has notified the FDA and has also invited distributors as well as The Dog Food Advisor to share the details of this event with consumers.

The FDA has announced a recall for a Nylabone Puppy Starter Kit that may be contaminated with Salmonella. Routine testing by the Nylabone company found Salmonella present in one of these kits, and you shouldn’t take a chance on them. If your dog has consumed a Nylabone affected by this recall, you should definitely call your vet.

Salmonella is a bacteria that can affect dogs, cats, and humans with dangerous symptoms. Watch for the signs! If your puppy has been exposed, keep an eye on her for fever, lethargy, diarrhea and vomiting, dehydration, and shock. For that matter, keep an eye on yourself and anyone who has handled the treat or the dog for similar symptoms.

The affected Nylabones are a 1.69 oz. package specifically for puppies, like the one pictured below, and have been distributed across the U.S. and in Canada. The package will be marked as Lot #21935, UPC 0-18214-81291-3, and an expiation date of 3/22/18. The Puppy Starter Kit should not be used at any cost, and you can take it back to the store you bought it from for a full refund.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - August 26, 2014 - Today, Mars Petcare US announced a voluntary recall of 22 bags of PEDIGREE® Adult Complete Nutrition dry dog food products due to the possible presence of a foreign material. The bags were produced in one manufacturing facility, and shipped to one retail customer. The facility production line has been shut down until this issue is resolved.

Affected bags, which were sold between August 18 and August 25 in 12 Dollar General stores* in Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee and Louisiana, may contain small metal fragments, which could have entered the packages during the production process. The foreign material is not embedded in the food itself, but may present a risk of injury if consumed. We encourage consumers who have purchased affected product to discard the food or return it to the retailer for a full refund or exchange. We have not received any reports of injury or illness associated with the affected product. The lot codes indicated below should not be sold or consumed.

Mars Petcare US is working with Dollar General to ensure that the recalled products are no longer sold and are removed from inventory.

The company is recalling the following three products:

All three products share the same “Use By” date of July 27, 2013.

Hy-Vee, Inc. is recalling certain bags of Hy-Vee dog food due to elevated levels of a chemical contaminant commonly found in corn.

Routine random tests conducted by the Iowa Department of Agriculture indicated higher-than-normal levels of aflatoxin in some samples of Hy-Vee dog food produced at a Kansas City plant operated by Pro-Pet, LLC.

Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring by-product from the growth of Aspergillus flavus and can be harmful to pets if consumed in significant quantities. Pets that have consumed this product and exhibit symptoms of illness including sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, or diarrhea should be taken to a veterinarian.

The recalled products carry three different "Best By" dates and were distributed to Hy-Vee stores in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin between October 26, 2012, and January 11, 2013.

An Ohio woman contacted Target 11 after her dog died. She thinks something was wrong with her dog’s food, and she’s not the only one. Consumer Investigator Robin Taylor discovered hundreds of dog owners have filed complaints about Purina Beneful.

An Ohio woman contacted Target 11 after her dog died. She thinks something was wrong with her dog’s food, and she’s not the only one. Consumer Investigator Robin Taylor discovered hundreds of dog owners have filed complaints about Purina Beneful.

“We waited for the test results and stayed with Mazey the whole time, and when they came back it was just not good news,” said Carissa Dority, of Cortland, Ohio.

Dority is from one of two families that have contacted me after their dogs died. They believe Beneful had something to do with their dogs’ deaths.

I talked to the Food and Drug Administration about this. The FDA is aware of the complaints, but hasn’t found a contaminant, so the dog food remains on the shelf.

Carissa and Scott Dority shared their story with me. They have loving memories of their 2 1/2 year old English Mastiff, named Mazey.

“I’ve never had a dog that would just come and bury her head in your lap because she loved you so much,” said Carissa.

In January, Scott picked up a big bag of Purina Beneful. A week later, Mazey started acting a little off. The following week she began throwing up.

“It seemed like there was really something wrong and I was really getting worried,” said Carissa.

At the vet, Mazey’s condition continued to deteriorate.

“They said that it was poison. It looked like she had drank antifreeze,” said Scott.

But the Doritys say the only thing that had changed was Mazey’s food. Their vet suspected aflatoxins that can come from moldy grains, including corn. Two days later, there was nothing more the vet could do.

“Her kidneys and liver were shutting down and there was no coming home for her,” said Carissa, fighting back tears.

That evening, they filed complaints with the Department of Consumer Affairs, the FDA and Purina. After reviewing the vet’s findings, the FDA began looking into Mazey’s death.

Scott took Mazey’s body to the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Center for Animal Diseases in Columbus for a necropsy, and sent samples of Beneful to the FDA.

“We assumed that you could go to the store and you could purchase any bag of dog food and your pet would be okay,” said Carissa.

On the Consumer Affairs website, I found more than 400 complaints of dogs getting sick or dying after eating Beneful. Most of the complaints have been filed in the past three months.

Purina calls the allegations “misleading” and says there’s “no scientific evidence” to support them.

“We are confident there is not a quality or safety issue with our products,” said Bill Salzman, a spokesman for Nestle Purina PetCare. He added, “There are no product recalls of Beneful, and in fact, Beneful has never had a product recall.”

“You don’t know whether the Beneful killed Mazey?” I asked the Doritys. “No. We do not,” said Carissa.

“In my heart I know it did. There’s nothing that could have done this. The only thing that answers the question is the dog food,” said Scott.

The FDA is awaiting a toxicology report. Those test results could take several weeks. It is also testing samples of the food and says if there is a safety concern, the agency will alert the public.

In the meantime, Purina stands by the safety of its food, issuing the following statement:

“We encourage any consumer with a question or comment about one of our products to call and speak with us directly at the toll-free number on every package. Any time a consumer believes their pet may be ill, they should contact their veterinarian, who is in the best position to assess their pet’s health and the various potential causes for an illness.”

URGENT CHICKEN JERKY RECALL...Nutri-Vet and Nutripet Chicken Jerky Products Because Of Possible Salmonella Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - February 20, 2013 - Nutri-Vet, LLC. of Boise, ID is voluntarily recalling its Nutri-Vet and NutriPet Chicken Jerky Products because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella can sicken animals that eat these products and humans are at risk for Salmonella poisoning from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the pet products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these symptoms after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has any of these signs, please contact your veterinarian.

Nutri-Vet is recalling the lot numbers below because the manufacturer of an ingredient used in the products below informed us of the possibility of Salmonella presence at the manufacturing facility, although no positive test results have been found on Nutri-Vet or NutriPet products to date.

The recalled Chicken Jerky Treats were distributed nationwide through online sales and in retail stores from April 2012 through February 2013 with Best By Dates ranging from April 20, 2014, through October 3, 2014.

The product comes in a clear plastic bag containing Chicken Jerky Treats as described below:

The United States based supplier has ceased the production and distribution of the ingredient supplied to Nutri-Vet while FDA and the manufacturer continue investigating as to the source of the potential contamination. No other products made by Nutri-Vet, LLC are included in the recall.

Consumers who have purchased Nutri-Vet and NutriPet Chicken Jerky Products are urged to stop feeding them to pets and return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Nutri-Vet at 1-877-729-8668 Monday thru Friday from 7am to 5pm MDT.

In the wake of massive Chinese chicken jerky dog treat voluntary recalls by Purina (for Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch brands) and Del Monte (for Milo’s Kitchen) due to the discovery of 4 antibiotic residues known to be illegal in the United States, as hoped, other brands of chicken jerky dog treats imported from China are following suit and voluntary recalling their brands as well.

The next manufacturer of chicken jerky dog treats joining the nationwide product recall is IMS Trading Corp, makers of the Cadet brand of dog treats.

IMS Trading Corp today announced it is voluntarily withdrawing its Cadet Brand Chicken Jerky Treat products sold in the United States until further notice.

The Company is taking this action after learning this week that the New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets (NYSDAM) found trace amounts of antibiotic residue in samples of Cadet brand Chicken Jerky Treat products. These antibiotics are approved for use in poultry in China and other major countries, including European Union member states, but are not among those approved in the U.S.  Cadet Brand Chicken Jerky Treat products are safe to feed as directed and have not been linked to ANY illnesses in dogs or humans. However, due to regulatory inconsistencies among countries, the presence of antibiotic residue is technically considered an adulteration in the United States.

At first, New York State authorities requested that IMS Trading Corp remove Cadet Brand Chicken Jerky treats from retail locations only in the state of New York.  We have decided to expand this and conduct a voluntary withdrawal of these chicken treat products nationwide.

A double testing program is being established to check for these antibiotics in China (point of origin) and the United States before we consider to sell these products in the future.  Testing will be based on a scientifically sound statistical sampling program.

There is no indication that the trace amounts of antibiotic residue are linked to the FDA’s ongoing investigation of chicken jerky products. The trace amounts of antibiotic residue (in the parts-per-billion range) do not pose a health or pet safety risk.

While the manufacturers involved in the nationwide recall of Chinese imported chicken jerky dog treats maintain that the antibiotics found in their products are not responsible for the thousands of dog illnesses reported over the past 6 years, more complete testing and evidence to that fact is warranted. The truth is, chicken jerky imported from China is responsible for the deaths of nearly 400 dogs and the illness of thousands more, with these antibiotic residues being the ONLY contamination discovered to date that isn’t also present in American-made treats that do NOT make our dogs sick.

Additionally, it remains to be discovered how extensively the chicken used to make these treats expands into other dog food production. The only way to ensure the safety and well-being of your pets is to stop feeding them foods and treats that are manufactured, sourced, or processed in China.

The melamine dog food scare in 2007, along with the Chinese government’s refusal to work with the FDA and investigators to locate the source of contamination in these treats further strengthens our position that when it comes to the health and safety of our pets, the Chinese are more concerned with their bottom line
